    At a recent scientific conference, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of an accomplished biologist who had immigrated to Canada from the Middle East eighteen years ago.  As we began chatting, it soon became clear that we shared interest in a variety of intriguing issues. We naturally talked about Middle Eastern politics and the Arab-Israeli conflict, but our conversation moved to speculating about reasons why those from the Middle East immigrate to Canada. Without hesitation, my new friend openly shared his own experience with me.

  • Muslim's in the west

    This is based on the talk given at the Saskatoon Inn, October 30, 2010, celebrating the Islamic history month. Like everyone else I have several identities. I was born in Sind Province, India/Pakistan before the subcontinent was divided.  I am not sure if I should call myself Indian, Pakistani or Indopakistani.  I grew up in Pakistan and got all of my under graduate education and a medical degree there.  I attended the University of Michigan where I got Masters degree and did specialty training in Neurology.  I wear my Michigan T-shirt when there is a football game and my son wears his Iowa jersey.  Last week he beat me.  I have lived in Saskatoon for 43 years.

    Religious Accommodation in the Workplace As a member of Saskatoon’s Islamic community, it has been my great privilege to meet and get to know many immigrant families.  Most of the families I have met come to Saskatoon from a number of Asian and African countries, and the reasons for their immigration are various.  To study at the University of Saskatchewan is one very common reason.  Many of these students bring spouses and families with them during the term of their studies.
